JaTrac Realistic Rendering System

Until now, the majority of advanced image synthesis systems were implemented in highly performant C/C++ languages. Not many of these systems are available publicly with source code, and those which are can be difficult to analyse and improve due to focus on optimization expected in production systems. JaTrac — a global illumination renderer we introduce in this paper has been developed as a tool augmenting the teaching and research in the area of image synthesis and hence it is characterized by modular, object oriented architecture, abundant interfaces for pluggable components, legible source code (Java), and ease of use along the entire synthesis pipeline — starting with camera model, through intersection optimizers, procedural primitives, hierarchical material system, global illumination, tone mapping operators, and antialiasing strategies. Currently JaTrac is built around ray tracing core and has support for path tracing, photon mapping, and density estimation particle tracing.
